What are the symptoms of diastasis?

They can be subdivided into abdominal symptoms, postural symptoms e symptoms related to pelvic floor insufficiency.

Abdominal symptoms include:

  • insufficiency of the linea alba with the appearance of hernias (umbilical, epigastric...)
  • abdominal bloating
  • digestive difficulties
  • abdominal pain
  • constipation due to failure of the abdominal thrust
  • gastro-oesophageal reflux due to altered intra-abdominal pressure
  • motor difficulties of the abdomen, in particular flexor difficulties
  • breathing difficulties (due to insufficient respiratory function of the abdominal muscles

Among the postural ones

  • lumbago
  • posture alterations with hyperlordosis
  • joint pain (e.g. hip pain)

Among those related to pelvic floor insufficiency

  • stress urinary incontinence
  • faecal incontinence
  • pelvic prolapses (uterine, bladder, haemorrhoidal...)
